A Prayer Before Work

A Prayer Before Commencing Any Task

Almighty God, our Help and Refuge, Fountain of wisdom and Tower of strength, who knowest that I can do nothing without thy guidance and help; assist me, I pray, and direct me to divine wisdom and power, that I may accomplish this task, and whatever I may undertake to do, faithfully and diligently, according to your will, so that it may be profitable to myself and others, and to the glory of thy Holy Name. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit: now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

A Better Resurrection, by Carlos Colón

(for scores, contact me here). This is a very intense, poignant poem. It is my hope that if you have lost a loved one, will immediately find comfort in the intensity and beauty of the words. This was a performance a few years at Baylor University with The Texas Voices, conducted by Alan Dyer. The only accompanying instrument is a cello.  Cellist Chris Martin did a wonderful job at the premier. Text by Christina Rossetti. See below.

A Better Resurrection

BY CHRISTINA ROSETTI
I have no wit, no words, no tears;
My heart within me like a stone
Is numb’d too much for hopes or fears;
Look right, look left, I dwell alone;
I lift mine eyes, but dimm’d with grief
No everlasting hills I see;
My life is in the falling leaf:
O Jesus, quicken me.
My life is like a faded leaf,
My harvest dwindled to a husk:
Truly my life is void and brief
And tedious in the barren dusk;
My life is like a frozen thing,
No bud nor greenness can I see:
Yet rise it shall—the sap of Spring;
O Jesus, rise in me.
My life is like a broken bowl,
A broken bowl that cannot hold
One drop of water for my soul
Or cordial in the searching cold;
Cast in the fire the perish’d thing;
Melt and remould it, till it be
A royal cup for Him, my King:
O Jesus, drink of me.

Performance at Duke: “Veo Violencia en la Ciudad,” “Las Lamentaciones de Rufina Amaya,” “Vencerá el Amor”

On March 19, 2019, Duke Divinity School hosted “Music & Martyrdom: Performing Faithfully,” an evening of music and conversation that reflected on the lives and legacies of martyrs. As part of the event, works by Salvadoran composer Carlos Colón were performed, including selections from his “Requiem: Las Lamentaciones de Rufina Amaya,” as well as “Veo Violencia en la Ciudad” and “Vencerá el Amor.” The event was made possible through the generous support of the Office of the Vice Provost of the Arts—Duke Arts, and is co-sponsored by the Department of Music, the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, and the Asian Pacific Studies Institute at Duke University.

You may purchase “Veo Violence…” – “I See Violence in the City” at this GIA Music link.
